Kickerino's

I remember the horrible rubber boots that I wore as a child.  The boots would leave this purple circle around my legs and no matter how hard I scrubbed the purple circles stayed until it was time to put the boots away in the Spring.  My skin would become hard and have a milky white cast on top of the purple.  My legs were sore all winter and sometimes they would bleed.  I hated those boots with a passion.  The other little girls (the ones whose parent's had money) wore what was called Kickerino's.

They were leather with plush lining.  I wanted a pair of those boots so badly.  Finally, in sixth grade, I used my baby-sitting money to buy myself a pair of Kickerino's.  My mother was worried that I would lose my shoes because I now had to carry them in a bag.  She was definitely against the new boots.  The ugly black rubber boots had been worn over my shoes.  I only had one pair of shoes, so if I had lost them it would have meant being shoeless until I come up with moeny to another pair.

You know... I have not thought about those boots in 40 years.

Spirit Woman

here i am, nokomis
i am here
walking behind
following
tracking your footsteps

i hear you, nokomis
softly singing
your voice
dancing on the tips
of the birch trees

once burned into my memory
long before i passed
through the stars
songs to the earth
songs to my heart
reclaiming
my forgotten ways

here i am, nokomis
i am here
spirit woman
touch me
i am
woman from the south wing
