For Gramma

We are two watercolor women,
jumping in harmony
toes pointed like ballet dancers
toward the river below

We are twin leaves spinning in the air,
performing a graceful pirouette
a last curtsey before the next ovation.

We are two watercolor women
absorbing light as we go created from and going home to our home in the soft liquid.

This is the perfect bridge with heights and depths of joy
it waited for us
patient and compassionate.

We are two watercolor women
united in our purpose finding
strength in tandem on our way home.

The bridge does not mourn our passing. NOr does the road that brought us there. It simply waits for more watercolor women to take the fall.

The Moccasin Game & Other Stories - Book Review

The Moccasin Game & Other Stories is a beautifully written book. Each story has a touch of humor, honesty and strong statements of spiritual well being. It is about many facets of life and lifestyles on the reservation and from many different points of view at Ojibwe culture. It is about history and tribal corruption, as well as, finding our way back home.

At one point of reading this book, I decided to not go to the weekly Ojibwe classes. I settled into the book and read the first page of one of the stories. The passage was about an elder man who was addressing a gathering and he spoke in english, but stated that he would of like to speak from his heart in Ojibwe. This struck deep within me. I jumped out of my chair and dashed to the Ojibwe class. I want to listen from an elder's heart and I don't want to be left behind.

The Moccasin Game is a strong reading that through these short stories, the message of Robert Treuer is bound to strike home in many readers.

Bemidji author Rober Treuer recently has his fourth book, the Moccasin Game & Other Stories published by Loonfeather Press.
