I promise said the Chairman
Poem by Cherylin Z. Martin-Wade

Dancing the Women’s Dance

Dancing the Women’s Dance,
she carries a water drum.
A gift song she sings.

The heartbeat of our ancestors
beats within us.
Their memories are passed
from mother to child.

She is a warrior
when it comes to
protecting the community
she gave her gift to share.

She is Grandmother,
Mother, Aunt, Sister and Friend.

She knows of the Moon
and her secrets,
the pain and joy of life.

She continues to
Dance the Women’s Dance
even when the
darkness surrounds her,
she is there.

Standing for Justice and Peace.
Singing the healing song.

This poem is written for and dedicated to the women who stood up for the people of Leech Lake when adversity, corruption took hold of our nation. Dedicated to Sally Morrison, Judy Hanks, Lenore Barsness, Linda Johnson and Kay Jackson.

I promise said the Chairman

When the money keeps rolling out; you don’t get an education or the books for that education.

When the money keeps rolling out; you don’t get the house to keep you warm.

When the money keeps rolling out; your babies won’t see a brand new future and oppression keeps them in a cold embrace.

When the money keeps rolling out; the politician with promises gold and oppression is still with us in a tighter grip.

When the money keeps rolling out; we are still the same, nothing has changed.

When the money keeps rolling out; its rolling out to line the pockets of the top government officials.

When the money keeps rolling out;
“I only use $25 dollar pens now to sign for the money, to sign for your money”, the tribal honey said.

When the money keeps rolling out; your future remains the same.

And the money keeps rolling out.
